From director Trotsen Onwetend, comes Europa, a socio-economic allegory. In a pastoral setting reminiscent of middle-period Pagnol, the materialistic, hedonistic forces of American capitalism seduce and corrupt the beneficent and communitarian states of Europe, represented by a herd of ungulates. According to the film-maker, “the work’s quadrupeds are the offspring of Europa, who refused to recognize the patriarchal ideology of Zeus and, as punishment, was turned into a cow.”
Onwetend has dismissed as “pedants” some conservative critics who pointed out that it was Io, not Europa, who was turned into a cow by Zeus.
