Considering car-makers' disastrous economies in purchasing ignition switches and air-bags, think what an adventure automobile travel will be when competitive forces tempt the manufacturers of driverless vehicles to start cutting corners.

The absurd purge of Russian schoolbooks to benefit Putin’s pal, who happens to be a textbook publisher, is blatant corruption – but it is blatant corruption in Russia and, unlike many of Putin’s policies, does not affect us here. Why was it front page news?
Corruption that is as blatant as that is, at least, transparent. We, on the other hand, are plagued with insidious, devious corruption – in Washington, in state capitals, in city halls. The Times is to be commended for its continuing exposure of such corruption – for example, its story on the lobbying of attorneys general. As long as sham campaign finance laws, extravagant, unchecked lobbying and incumbency-protective electoral machinations make our own governments sinks of greed and hypocrisy, corruption in Russia, China or elsewhere should be reported only as a sideshow. |
