I was scrolling through one of those “slideshows” of historic photographs – this one on what appears to be a pretty crappy website called Buzzlamp. (That judgement is based on the tits and ass photos that clutter it: “28 of the Bounciest Boobs We’ve Ever Seen,” etc.)

It is a detail from a 1919 photograph. The locale is Munich. I’d like you to guess what this young fellow is up to. He’s posing, obviously. His intent is to give the impression of a tough, streetwise superiority, a sort of grim contempt for the world around him. It is a pretty standard young person’s fuck-you attitude.
So – what do you think is going on? Is he responding to a passing group of his peers, perhaps from a better social class, snickering, ignoring him, or otherwise showing their scorn? Is he the leader of a gang trying to impress his underlings with his steely stare? Or is he just mocking the pedestrian world before him with with his glare of youthful defiance and derision?
